The English Department places learning and teaching as the foundation stone of raising standards and providing an inclusive, integrated and challenging experience for all students. We provide the full CCEA curriculum at KS3/KS4 and offer GCSE English Language, GCSE English Literature and AS/A2 Level English Literature through the CCEA examining board. The Department has nine full time teachers, one part-time teacher and some additional teaching from the Learning Support Department.
We support the aims of ‘Every School's a Good School' and 'Read, Count, Succeed' and strive to provide a stimulating and enjoyable learning environment. We are fully committed to assessment for learning and marking for improvement. We support all our pupils in their efforts to attain their highest possible achievements by devising up-to-date, relevant schemes of work and resources, including a range of digital media and ICT experiences. We use baseline information to identify pupils’ strengths and target specific skills for further improvement. We have a very positive record of examination results and always encourage our students to achieve their very best.
We supplement our teaching programme with a range of extra-curricular activities including creative writing, the Gaming and Illustration Forum and a hugely successful public speaking forum. We continue to avail of opportunities where students can develop their literacy skills. Events such as Readathon, 'Win the Pin' and debating prove popular, and we also enjoy participating in and hosting literacy festivals as well as educational visits.
We want our pupils to enjoy, appreciate and achieve in a caring, supportive environment with dedicated, committed teachers.
